NEWRIGS - Geological conservation in North East Wales

The website of the North-East Wales RIGS group -

covering the geological heritage of

Denbighshire, Flintshire, Wrexham and East Conway

Welcome to the NEWRIGS Homepage!

Regionally Important Geodiversity Sites (RIGS) are the most important places for geology, geomorphology and soils outside of legally-protected nature reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest.

Founded in 1993, NEWRIGS is the regional organisation responsible for promoting the conservation and sustainable use of RIGS in the county of Clwyd (formerly Denbighshire and Flintshire), in terms of their educational or research value in the Earth Sciences, and in some cases for tourism.

Our website tells you more about the way RIGS are managed and how the RIGS group works within the national framework. There are informative sections on the geology of north-east Wales and on geodiversity and the reasons for its importance. We have included a bibliography and there are downloadable guides to aspects of our geological heritage, including the popular Town Trails leaflets. We hope you enjoy browsing our site, and if you have any questions then please feel free to contact us.
